It's All About Me

My name is Donna Fischer. I am a Breast Cancer Survivor since 2003, but more than that I am married to Ron since 1967, have a daughter, Jennifer who is married to Jon and they have Joseph and Jocelyn. I also have a son, Matthew who is married to Kelley and they have Brandon. My family mean more to me than anything else in this world and believe me I love my children, BUT grandchildren are even better. There are absolutely no words that can be said to express my feelings toward them.

I have worked from the beginning of time, well it seems that long. Right out of high school into the insurance business. Then it was the Airport, the School System, a Health Foundation, a Safety Engineer Expert Witness and, finally, the health industry. I do believe this is my last stop. Boy, have things changed over the years in every aspect of working. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

Getting older is no picnic either. Aches, pains, pills, medication, walking sideways and just pooped…yep that’s aging. I totally understand “going to bed with the chickens!” And what is it about weight…that’s a whole other story on its own.

I have it so made in this world. Yes, I work but I have a “slave” at home. I know that Ron must feel like that at times, but he has that gene that not all men have. You know, the one that gives him the ability to work on and fix almost everything! Now Ron is a procrastinator and you can not push him but he has the ability. So, I don’t do much at home. However he did start a little spa repair business to work on part time which unfortunately for him time-wise has turned into a full time job some weeks. He complains but you know he likes it or he really would not be doing it.

I asked my daughter to set this up so that I will have a place to promote and discuss breast cancer survivors. After having attended a Casting For Recovery retreat in the Northern part of Arizona…a three day weekend of learning how to fly fish, I had to do something to be sure this retreat continued. Jennifer and I had our first Bunco for Breast Cancer Survivors the Fall of 2006. I got so many donations for giveaways…people are so generous and have been touched so much by Breast Cancer and we raised $700. The next year we grew and raised $1000 and this year we raised over $1,300. All proceeds were donated to Casting for Recovery. I am now working with the local CFR group and hope to begin a volunteer group that will pass the word and help to support CFR. We need to have more and more survivors sign up for the retreats too. You can not let Breast Cancer define you but it sure does change a lot in your life and future.
